What’s in my Bag? Carry-On Edition.

Carry on luggage Essentials

I put way too much thought into packing, which is super evident from my Tips and Tricks for Packing Light post. Naturally, my packing obsession also extends to my carry on luggage. What you pack in your carry on bag is so essential for staving off boredom on flights, and for making sure you’re prepared when you land.

So, I thought I would share a peek at a few things I can’t live without in my carry on luggage. Whether it’s short or long haul, these are always the first items to make the cut.

Travel Phone Charger

There is nothing worse than stepping off your flight and your phone immediately running out of battery. If you’re flying short-haul, it’s highly unlikely that your plane will have phone charging facilities. And, if you’re like me and tend to listen to music off your phone, then your battery is going to suffer for it. A travel charger is such a must for me now, and I don’t think I could survive on holiday without one.

You can get them really cheap from almost anywhere, but I bought mine on amazon. It holds two charges, so it’s perfect if you’re out and about a lot. This is one of those purchases that will just make your whole life easier.

A Book

For when listening to music and staring into space just doesn’t quite cut it anymore. I’m not really a magazine person, but they work just as well. Sometimes it’s nice to have something to focus on to make time fly! This year, I read Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. If you have been loving The Handmaid’s Tale TV Series or if you have read the book, then you will also adore this book.

Notepad and Pen

You never know when inspiration is going to hit you. I try to always carry a small notepad and pen around with me regardless of the situation. Just in case I suddenly think of  a blog post idea, or remember something I need to add to my to-do list. I literally have the memory of a goldfish, so if I think of something I immediately have to write it down, otherwise I will forget.

Check out all the Kikki.K notebooks, they are to die for!

Lip Balm and Hand Cream

Planes are the driest places on Earth. Fact. So you need to keep yourself super hydrated if you don’t want to battle the effects for days afterwards. If I’m on a long-haul flight, I’ll usually take some moisturizer and maybe even a face mask. But, on short-haul flights, I like to stick to a couple of little products to keep my skin hydrated.

For lip balm, I’ll usually stick with the classic Burts Bees, and hand cream is whatever I happen to have at that time. At the moment I have been loving this Crabtree and Evelyn one!

I don’t think there is any explanation needed for these, they are so essential.

Document Folder

Airports are much less stressful when you know that everything is organised and in one place. I like to keep my passport and boarding passes in a folder that I can easily access as and when I need it. This way, you’re not constantly having false alarms where you think you have lost your passport!

If you’re going somewhere sunny, then you’re going to want to rock your favourite pair of sunglasses as soon as you arrive. To be honest, I tend to carry all of my sunglasses in my carry-on luggage anyway because I’m so scared that anything valuable will get stolen out of my check-in bag. I’ve watched Orange is the New Black, I know what goes down in those random suitcase searches!

Sunglasses are also perfect for long-haul flights when you want to cover up the bags and dark circles under your eyes. I’m not the only one who can’t sleep a wink on planes right?

A Hat

There are tonnes of benefits to having a hat in your carry-on bag:

  1. It saves space in your suitcase and stops it from getting squished under all your other things!
  2. You can quickly cover up your hair if the flight has left it limp and lifeless.
  3. You’ll have some instant sun protection when you arrive at your destination.

When I go away, I almost always take a cap because they are the easiest type of hat to carry around.

Ear Mufflers and a Sleeping Mask

These wax ear mufflers that I picked up from Boots will forever be the saviour of my sleep. I have actually talked about them in a bit more detail in my Guide to Getting the Best Beauty Sleep. But they deserve a place in this post too because of how useful they are on long-haul flights. I always seem to forget how noisy planes are! So if you are like me and you have to sleep in a void of no noise and no light, then ear mufflers and a sleeping mask are essential in your carry-on.

The sleeping mask I’m using at the moment I actually picked up from the Line Friends store in Seoul. Don’t you think its cute?

Laptop and Chargers

Like I said, anything valuable that I take on holiday with me will always go in my carry-on bag. I know lots of people don’t take their laptop on holiday with them, but I always find I regret it if I don’t. With having a blog and working freelance, there is always something I need to be using it for, whether that’s replying to emails or publishing on here!

I hope you liked this post! If you did, make sure to give it a like and maybe even save  it to your Pinterest?

What are some of your carry-on essentials? I’d love to know down in the comments!

I always have to have my batter pack to charge my phone (the thought of having a dead battery gives me anxiety). I always had to have headphones, water, my iPad/book, hand lotion and tissue paper + I always have at least 3 sanitary pads at all times just incase I need it or another woman does. Gotta look out for the sisters 🙂

Tissue Paper is such a good one. There is nothing worse than needed the toilet on a flight when the tissue paper has run out haha!

My essentials would have to be lip balms too because I have really dry lips, so I always have one or two on me xx
